Greetings to you all in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
This week we are going to look at what Jesus said plainly to
his disciples about his suffering and death. He said to his disciples that He must
go to Jerusalem and suffer much from the elders, the chief priests and the
teachers of law. These words that Jesus spoke are written in the Gospel of
Matthew 16:21-28. Summary of these accounts are as follows.
·
Jesus said to his disciples, “I will be put to
death, but three days later I will be raised to life."
· He further said to his disciples, "If any of you want to come with me, you must
forget yourself, carry your cross, and follow me. If you want to save your own
life, you will lose it, but if you lose your life for my sake, you will find it. Will you
gain anything if you win the whole world but lose your life? Of course not! There
is nothing you can give to regain your life.
·
For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory
of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to
his deeds.”
Discussion
In this scripture reading, Jesus told his disciples to forget
yourself and follow him which also implies to our lives. How can we forget ourselves
to follow Jesus? It somewhat means we must not worry too much about satisfying
our lives with the materials of this world. What will we eat, wear and live must
not be seen as very important in our lives. We must consider serving our Lord
and Saviour as a priority and always commit to our fellowship with God and his
Church.
How will we carry our cross and follow Jesus?
To carry our cross is to endure the challenging times or
situations in our lives while in the course of our Christian faith. There may
be physical shortfalls in terms of wealth or in terms of troubles in life or illnesses. Despite all
the odd and challenges or difficult situations we may go through, never give up
on serving our Lord in praising him and worshipping him and also supporting
ministries in the Church to extend and maintain God’s Kingdom on Earth.
If we prioritise our personal activities in our lives to
settle well even if we know that there was an announcement regarding a church
meeting or a night fellowship or a physical work required at church but we give
less attention and no commitment is given in this regard. This could be an example
of trying to safe our lives on Earth. If anything strike our lives, we may lose
it if we don’t have faith in Jesus
Christ and keep busy with the worldly life.
